It seems with alarming regularity the tone and timbre of discourse found in your feed of choice pendulates feverishly from side to side. The carelessly sown seeds of discord sprouting gardens of relativist “truths” trimmed and arranged into convenient bouquets of nonsense. With an involuntary “click” we share these arraignments of absurdity without pause and reflexively brace ourselves for the coming shit storm.
“So and so said something”- Nut uh! Check out this internet article…
“One side say such and such but the other knows better”- Oh yeah my 5 second held belief disagrees…
“The sky is blue”- No it’s not, here’s a link that proves it…
“Earth is round”- Don’t even get me started on this.
In the end the flood of misinformation carefully crafted from half-truths, opinions and agenda-laden political dogma reigns supreme. We don’t have time to apply critical thinking because in the instance it takes to open another browser window, the battle is lost to laziness. Those striving to make a point can be assured there is a troll lurking in the shadows with their counterpoint cannon locked and loaded, poised to unleash an onslaught of fringe blog posts and conspiracy delirium links that permeate the cybersphere.
We’ve been heading this direction for decades now and I’m afraid there is no turning back. The internet granted us access to the vast compendium of human knowledge but unfortunately with that came the opinion of every asshole with a keyboard. To filter stupidity would require consensus on what is right and what is flat-earth theory and since they are selling out convention halls to discuss the latter, I for one am not holding out hope.
