On the Breath of Summer

There in the radiance of the retreating solstice sun she suddenly appeared
An apparition of elegance or a taunting specter of discontent?
A dogged reminder of persistent failures and unquenchable thirst.
Yet another oasis in this desert of metaphors.

Backlit by illuminance and shining like an angel in the afterimage
The light carressing her gentle face and virtually suspending her above the fray
The impossibly graceful whose elegance seemed inappropriately misplaced
Among the snake charmers and melody makers of this tribe of the faint

Swept in on the warm breath of summer
She, infusing hope instantly into the otherwise unaware
He, refusing to cope with the disparity of his despair
Thereupon the kindness of the evening
And there among the chaos of the feeling
Each offering and receiving
The sacred peace of a common meaning

When this tale has unfolded completely
And the days of reflecting are at hand
The improbability of those few moments
And the impossibility that fate did grant
Will play like some chord of absurdity
In the choir of this life’s parade
