I can’t help but feel a whiff of nostalgic grief over this news. As someone whom just recently rented half a dozen hand-picked family classics for less than 10 bucks it saddens me that this era is ending much in the way the death of cassettes left a bitter taste. Perhaps it’s just the furious and indomitable march of time that is so daunting. 41 years, gone in a flash!
One of my first gigs was at a video store and I spent many a summer prior watching movies at the neighborhood Pik-a-flik. There dwelled the lovers of movies, the artisans of cinema. The true video enthusiasts have all gone on to other pursuits I suppose. The closest I’ve seen residing at video game Meccas like GameStop.
Rest in peace once mighty giant. There are no late fees in the dustbin of history.
