The Ants of Entropy

We have only an illusion of control. Cosmically speaking we are no more significant or looked after by the universe than the ants beneath our feet. Therefore we should not be surprised by misfortune but rather glad when it takes the form of a flat tire or a stubbed toe and not an incomprehensibly large and equally indifferent foot descending suddenly upon us.

Our instinct to move things from disorder to order is countermanded by the laws of entropy. Virtually every aspect of reality is moving from order to chaos yet we foolishly think we can triumph over the laws of nature. Perhaps harmony comes from recognizing the uncontrollable aspects of our lives and conceding that we are helpless to avoid them.

Perhaps the reason we tend to feel that the universe is conspiring against us is due in large part to entropy. The tendency of a system to move from order to disorder in our conscious memories as described by Astronomer Arthur Eddington this “arrow of time” moves in such a way so that things appear to degrade over time. One of our most powerful time keeping tools is our ability to detect changes based on the emergence of disorder or chaos. The glass that was once sitting peacefully on the edge of the table, its’ molecules arranged neatly, strongly bonded to form a solid ordered state, now lies in ruins on the floor is a clear indicator by causality that time has passed and effected in a chaotic manner the previously ordered state of the glass.

Therefore, our perception of order is likewise an illusion, albeit one predicated on the misunderstanding of the 2nd law of thermodynamics as a whole. When we mistakenly perceive order in the universe we are neglecting to see simple movements to disorder. For example the time in which it took you to read this your brain registered and ascribed order to the words but the addition of this minimally ordered information is greatly offset by your body converting that once very orderly breakfast you just ate into energy lost as disordered heat whose net effect is a lose but hopefully for you the reader, one worthy of the time.
