Scared by Design

For anyone genuinely perplexed by the chaos swirling around this current global crisis and left wondering why we all can’t just chill out despite the  preponderance of of evidence to the contrary I ask you to simply consider this:

Nervousness and overabundance of caution are in our very nature. Early man developed a fear of the dark and by perceiving menace in the shadows, a healthy respect of the unknown. Natural selection favored this by providing very little downside to this innate fear by rewarding the cautious with survival, and the careless with death.

Modern man may find this byproduct of our evolution inconvenient with a potential devastating financial impact but reasonings such as this are relatively new in terms of geological time and not deemed critical by our intrinsic survival mechanisms.

In other words if the worst that comes from being overly cautious regarding this outbreak is financial woes, economic crisis or even global market meltdown it would take hundreds perhaps thousands of generations to rewire our basic human skittishness and err on the side of recklessness. Sorry dude, we were built to be scared.
