When considering the current fractured state of society, it occurred to me that somewhere along the way, some critical control mechanism degraded beyond function. This fundamental circuit operated for centuries, providing a filter between thought and communication by slowing or restricting access to the public feed. This loop delay afforded ample opportunity to rethink, revise, and reconsider the weight of the words we wield. The immediacy of social media has twisted the pipes, impossibly kinking, diverting, and refocusing the natural flow of data into a relentless torrent of ramshackle rhetoric, swamping the feed with inferior and incongruous information.
Our check valve has burst.
Our backflow preventer has failed.
The master manipulators of malice have sabotaged the fail-safes, undermining inherent integrity while indulging our narcissistic need to share the minutia of our existence. We are every one of us left to wade knee-deep in the fetid funk of failed civility with ourselves ultimately to blame.
