Huddled in the strange new darkness
The very first night in his new home
A baby piggy is counting the moments
Facing a long cold night all alone
Strange noises crowd his tiny space
Sleep but the dreams that evade
With his heart running a frantic race
His sense of comfort continues to fade
Just when he fears he can bear no more
The noises begin to grow clear
Shadows coalesce and begin to resolve
As ghosts of piggies past appear
The eldest ghost speaks suddenly first
In his charismatic yet stoic way
“Welcome, young one, to your new life.
You’re safe here now, don’t dismay.”
Charlotte and Penny squeak up next
“Listen to Wilbur the wise, we implore
There’s plenty of love for you here
And all the treats you could ever wish for”
Next spoke the brothers, Mario first
In his calm and brotherly way
“Make lots of noise, zoom all about
And your humans will delight in your play.”
Just before the dawn could break
The last piggy ghost would appear
Weegi nodded at those who gathered
Then whispered his final good cheer
“Be good to my humans, young Gizmo
As once they said, I was their last
So there must be something about you
To enable them to move past.”
“The hole that was left when I went on
To that great lettuce field up above
Is shaped perfectly for you little one
With all of your unbounded love.”
As the first rays of dawn gently fall,
Warmth fills this once-lonely space.
The love of the piggies who came before
Shines brightly on young Gizmo’s face.
Now, when the humans approach him
These strangers feel distant no more.
Gizmo the guinea pig squeaks with delight
His love shaped by those who came before.
