The Asymptotic Life

I. The Dream
Eyes snapped suddenly open
Blink away the scene
To only wind up deeper
In a dream within a dream

Plugged into the machine
Incapable of escape
Further down the vortex
‘Til the dream finally takes shape

Time doesn’t behave down here
No tyranny of the tick and the tock
You can dream a lifetime in a blink
With little impact on the clock

Dreams are where ghosts commune
Living out their forevermore
We remember by recalling
The dream of miscalculated lore.

II. The Trauma
Flash bang! Back to reality
A screech, then a sudden jolt
Seconds stretch endlessly on
While our body’s in full revolt

Awareness so finely tuned
Bone and glass in painful strife
The moment stretches into
A subjective eternal afterlife

Awake! Resolve the dream.
The dilations of time persist
Perception defies the counting
While our mind struggles to resist

III. The End
Surviving paid for a lifetime
Dreaming kept you young
Time stops mattering well before
Your death knell has been rung

Now at the end of the journey
Time slows to an incalculable pace
And there is where we live on
In that infinite diminishing space.
