A Heretic’s Prayer

Part 4: Far Father- A Penance

Far father, oh so far from heaven
Wallowing in an ignorant shame
The myth and magic mixed with leaven
Rising up in an unchallenged claim

You ignore the progress of free thought
Suppress it with reckless disregard
Ensure dissension is never taught
Hoisted by your holiest petard

While secular intellects bristle
In the absence of profundity
You mindlessly pen your epistle
In the act of blind absurdity

Yet the world at large grows boundlessly
You still remain cloistered in the past
Heretics carry on soundlessly
Despite denials that you may cast

Failing to seize opportunity
Bound to some moral imperative
Sowing the seeds of disunity
Unable to grow the narrative

So many great minds of history
Have tirelessly toiled to unravel
Every universal mystery
Along each dark road that they travel

Giant leaps of imagination
Reshaping the world we once had known
Detached from the myth of creation
Many gardens of reason have grown

While back under the church and steeple
Evolution has screeched to a halt
Yet the clergy still squeeze the people
Profiting off an inherent fault

Pounding their guilt and faith into swords
Fashioning punishment from abstract
Shoot down the progress we move towards
Keeping sacred endowments intact

In the ultimate mass delusion
The players don’t know they have been played
Fueled by the grandest illusion
Feasting on the souls of the betrayed

Inconceivably the greatest sin
Perpetrated by all of mankind
Was ignoring instinct from within
Treating science as if it were blind

The church failed to see the benefit
Of expanding myths that they had told
Instead, they declared us “hypocrite”
Collecting tithe for the lies they sold

We now gather here at the present
In this time of unparalleled fate
Empowered to face the unpleasant
In defiance of myths, we create

Listen to this heretics prayer
Molded from the earthy claw within
Let facts defy the fictional fare
Growing beyond original sin
