Potsy Gopher

Born from the seeds of pure imagination
Fed on the media of the day
Mythology built for a hungry mind
Seeking friendship in a curious way

Not starved so much for attention
Yet hungry for the affirmative kind
The young boy forged a friendship
With a kid born straight from his mind

Part Love Boat, part Happy Days
Mixed with some Spider Man force
Potsy Gopher was ceremoniously born
Setting a boy’s future on its course.

For years he’d join the family
Always a spot at the dinner table
For the boy he was a collaborator
Spinning stories into fable

Doing battle with the corner shadows
Waging war at the cold cellar door
Fighting off the dark brooding Crapple
A young Lord versus the nevermore

Together they cruised the airwaves
Saturday mornings, broadcast cartoons
Dialing into shortwave frequencies
Spinning vinyl through cold afternoons

Oh, they were both brave and mighty
Fighting pirates in the backyard dry dock.
Wooden swords held tight at the ready
Banishing foes of primitive stock

Eventually the years would catch up
New friends replaced childhood dreams
Potsy Gopher was no longer needed
And fantasy came apart at the seams

Dissolved as he did into nothing
We’re all but to a moment away
Yet an imaginary friend can live onward
For the dreams that time can’t betray

The legends, though they may refuse to die
And time, it just won’t stand still
Yet the analog patience echoes onward
For a dream that time can’t fulfill
